Let's get started.

#1. Get a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

Your university issues a CAS number after you accept an offer and pay a deposit.
This unique number links your visa to your course.
⚠️ Don’t apply before your CAS is issued.

UKVisaTeam Insight: “Before paying a course deposit, confirm the university’s sponsor licence number on the UKVI list. Fake or unlisted institutions cause automatic refusals.”

#2. Choose the Right Visa Type

Most students need the UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4).
If you’re under 18 and will be studying at a private school, apply for a Child Student Visa.

If you want to bring dependents, they will need to apply for partner or child dependent visas; however note that this is only possible for post-graduate studies of 9 months or more. Please also take note of the additional financial requirements for partner and each child.

#3. Prepare Financial Documents

You will need tuition fees for 1 year + living costs for 9 months (£1,529 per month in London, or, £1,171 elsewhere).
Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days prior to application date in a regulated financial institution. Note that the funds must be immediately available.

You will need to provide the following valid documentation to prove your financial eligibility:

  • Bank statements from a regulated financial institution
  • Proof of relationship and written consent for use of funds if your parents are funding your studies.
  • Verifiable sponsorship letter if your studies are funded by a Government, International Institution, or an international employer.
  • Verifiable proof if your studies are being funded by a student loan.

UKVisaTeam Insight: “If a parent sponsors you, include an affidavit of support and birth certificate. Missing these two documents is one of the top five refusal reasons for students. Explain where your funds have come from – help UKVI to believe that your funds are genuinely available for you to study in the UK.”

#4. English Language Test

You must pass a UKVI approved1 Secure English Language Test (SELT) at an approved test centre in your home country2.

Official: GOV.UK - Prove your English language abilities with a secure English language test (SELT)

  • UKVisaTeam Insight  “Check that your test centre is on the UKVI approved list and that you are taking the test at the correct level for the course you wish to study – eg a degree level courses need equivalent to CEFR level B2.”

1 Approved courses are by Pearson; PSI Services (UK) Ltd, IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT.

2 A complete list of the approved test centres can be found here:

#5. TB Test Certificate

Required for most nationalities outside Europe & North America. Check your country against the list on the UKVI website and follow the country link to find an approved test centre:

Official: GOV.UK - Countries where you need a TB test for your UK visa application

UKVisaTeam Insight: "Make sure your TB test is dated in the last 6 months before your application and check your test centre is on the approved list."
